I sure need a break from this place, for the rest of my life!

Under California law many workers who work an 8 hour shift are entitled to a 10 minute break midway before lunch and a 10 minute break midway after lunch. This is just enough time to check your social media and make an anti-Trump post, or grab a quick drink from the company fridge and use the bathroom.

For most workers this break will not result in any significant loss of productivity and simply allows people to use the bathroom and grab a quick drink without it being awkward. In my experience a lot of places extend these to paid 15 minute breaks even though employers are only required to provide 10 minutes.

I am strongly in favor of keeping these breaks as law. However, employees still have to be smart and understand if you are working longer than 8 hours you might not get all the required breaks at some point, and people just need to deal with that if they want to keep their jobs, in my opinion. You can be right about the law and still lose your job for walking off without permission so use common sense. It's worse in other states, keep that in mind on hour 10 and 1/2 when you are not given the option to take a 2nd lunch break.
